Since November of 2012, Ken Shields has served as Director of Operations and Education for CASIS where he is responsible for the planning and execution of activities focused on sponsored projects and payloads destined for the ISS National Laboratory. This includes identifying appropriate resources and technology partners for facilitating payload development, testing, integration and successful execution of flight projects.
Planning requirements of Mr. Shields includes annual development of a comprehensive departmental budget, identification of necessary human resource expertise, top-level schedule of operations activities and an operations business plan with associated policies and procedures necessary to support the Operations Department. Additionally, the CASIS STEM and educational outreach programs fall under the purview of the Operations department, for which Mr. Shields directs a broad spectrum of space-related education and training programs for students, teachers and the general public by leveraging the ISS National Lab as a novel education platform.
Per his duties as the NASA Liaison for CASIS, Mr. Shields serves as a critical interface to the NASA ISS National Lab Manager, the ISS Program Science Office, and the ISS Payloads Office. Mr. Shields joined CASIS in January of 2012, serving as the Operations Department’s Senior Project Manager, where he managed the day-to-day operational, logistical, and tactical aspects of the department, providing oversight, and technical expertise (payloads/research) and incremental research plans.
Through management positions with private commercial companies in the fields of intermodal transportation and specialized global logistics, Mr. Shields brings to CASIS more than 20 years of expertise and experience in program and project management, customer service, and business operations. Ken received his B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee in Transportation and Logistics with a minor in Management.
